Golfers who align themselves too close to the ball when limbering up to take a shop could find themselves losing distance.
This is the view held by Dr Jim Suttie of Scripps New, a former PGA Teacher of the Year.
He recently watched the 30 amateurs take to the tee and noted how many stood closer than necessary to the ball, adversely affecting the trajectory of the shot.
Dr Suttie said that the error causes a high backswing and steep downswing, leading to a lot of height being gained, but detracting from yardage.
He advised: "A better posture for these players would be about a 30-degree bend forward from the waist, with the arms just hanging very softly from the shoulders.
"This would get these players standing farther from the ball and allow them to have a flatter, more rounded backswing, resulting in a shallower, more inside-out downswing."
Dr Suttie, also known as 'the Doc', was named by Golf Digest as being in the top 20 golf coaches in the US, claiming the number one spot in the state of Illinois.
